stated that the testes developed early in embryonic life beneath the peritoneum on the dorsal wall of the abdominal cavity. They later descended into the scrotum, each carrying with it an out-pocketing of the peritoneum, the tunica vaginalis propria testis. This became detached from the peritoneal cavity in the descent of the testes and from an independent serous cavity enveloping the anterior and lateral surfaces of the testis.He also found that there was a thin film of fluid within this cavity.The limited amount of movement of the pressure-senstive testis that was permitted within this cavity and within the elastic scrotum helped to prevent damage to the organs. Moreover descent into the scrotum provided an environment a few degrees lower in temperature than the abdominal cavity, and this lower temperature was a necessary condition for spermatogenessis.
