Abstract Hepatic encephalopathy is a reversible neuropsychiatric state complicate, advanced, decompensated liver disease and or extensive portosystemic shunting. It is a quite varied clinical presentation, ranging from subtle behavioral changes (such as insomnia and euphoria) to delirium, seizures or coma. The liver is important in carbohydrates, lipid digestion and absorption, protein and amino acid metabolism. It plays an important role in the metabolic process involving all water soluble vitamins. Providing adequate and appreciate nutrition is essential for the well being and support of patients with acute and chronic liver disease. Daily calorie in hepatic encephalopathy should 35-45 kcal 1kg/day from non-protein energy. Protein intake should decrease to 0.5-1.5 g/kg body weight/ day if stage I or II encephalopathy is present and to 0.5g/k cal/day if stage III or IV encephalopathy is present. |
