Abstract The present study was disigned to evaluate the concentrations of PH, lactic and SCF As in the faeces of breast-fed and formula-fed babies. This study was performed in Paediatric Department, Faculty of Medicine Zagazig University in the period from January, 1996 to October, 1996, the study included 30 full-term healthy neonates which were classified into 2 group : Group (A) : included 15 neonates of breast- fed babies which subdivided according to the age of the babies into :- group I : breast-fed babies at age of 2 weeks and group II: the same group at age of 4 Group (B) :. included 15 neonates of formula-fed babies. which subdivided according to the age of the babies into :- group III Iormula- fed babies at age of 2 weeks and group IV : the same group at age of 4 The faeces of each group was examined at 2 and 4 weeks of age for PH, the lactic acid and SCFAs concentrations. The breast-fed babies showed higher concentrations of acetic, lactic acids and lower PH and SCFAs values, these factors decreasethe growth of pathogenic organisms in the gut of the newborn . While formula-fed babies snowed lower concentrations of acetic, lactic acids and higher PH values, these factors in addition to other factors such as microbial contamination by bottles, teats, the hand of the mothers, flies or environment increase the growth of pathogenic organisms. |
