Objectives: To assess doctor- patient relationship in PHC facilities in Zagazig district and to structure a plan for improving doctor-patient relationship in PHC facilities.
Study design: A cross-sectional design.
Study setting: 12 Primary Health Care Facilities in Zagazig Health District, Sharkia Governorate (2 urban and 10 rural).
Study subjects: 52 doctors.
Results: 51.9 % of primary health care doctors in Zagazig Health District, Sharkia Governorate had satisfactory performance as regard doctor-patient relationship. The worst points of performances were getting family history, giving information, communicating diagnosis, getting past history, management and closing. These points must be taken in consideration in the improvement plan. Also, there was association between sex, marital status and doctor’s performances where male doctors had better performance than female doctors and single had better performance than married.
Recommendations: Based on the results of this study, it is recommended that Ministry of Health and Population should organize periodic training courses for doctors in PHC facilities to develop their communication skills, make survey and focus group with doctors to explore their problems especially female and married and make periodic assessment of doctor-patient relationship in PHC facilities and links the results by financial incentive. Education Sectors should modify student curriculums and give special attention to doctor-patient relationship with practical application and perform early engagement of students (PBL) Problem Based Learning. It is recommended also to conduct a program to improve doctor-patient relationship.
