Abstract

Abdominal operative procedures are among the most frequent surgical procedure. This type of surgery is still associated with substantial postoperative morbidity. A serious and frequent complication following this type of surgery is the development of incisional hernia.
Incisional hernia is defined as a visible and palpable bulge, commonly developing as a complication of abdominal surgical procedures. About 80% of the ventral hernia is represented by incisional hernia following abdominal surgery. Incisional hernia develops in about 11% of cases and in up to 23% of cases with wound infection or other forms of wound complications.
Repair of incisional hernia using the laparoscopic technique has continued to evolve since its inception in 1991. Laparoscopic incisional hernia repair seems to be efficacious and safe, as there is decreased postoperative pain, length of hospital stay, wound infection and postoperative ileus. The increasing growth of this methodology across the world indicates that these goals might indeed be achieved. Many publications in the literature appear to prove that the complication and recurrence rates are markedly lowered with the laparoscopic repair. So this procedure may become the standard of cure in the near future.
