Abstract

Unwanted pregnancy is a major public health problem worldwide. Emergency contraceptive pills has the potential to substantially decrease the rates of unintended pregnancy and abortion .The aims of the study were to identify the perception and practice of emergency contraceptive pills among nurse midwives and to find out the relationship between : nurse’s Perception , practice of emergency contraceptive pi lls and the
various factors. The study was carried out on a purposive sample of 300
nurses, who were picked - up by the non - probability sampling technique
and who were working in obstetric departments in Zagazig university
Hospital, General Hospital, EI- Ahrar hospital and 15 family planning
clinics. A self- administered questionnaire sheet to collect the necessary data about characteristics of nurses, perception, utilization and whether they used proper counseling technique regarding emergency
contraceptive pi lls. Results obtained from this study revealed that the
majority of the nurses had inadequate perception regarding ECPs, had
no experience with using ECPs and failed and became pregnant. More
than half of the sample reported improper technique when counseling
patient about ECPs. There were no statistical significant relations•
between nurses perception about ECPs , nurses age and years of
experience. Also.There was no statistical significant relation between nurses practice and their training .There were a highly statistical significant relations between nurses perception about ECPs and their training , nurses years of experience and practice of emergency
contraceptive pills. This study concluded that nurses perception
regarding emergency contraceptive pills was statistically influenced by
the previous training, nurses practice regarding emergency contraceptive
pills was statistically influenced by years of experience.
