Abstract Background: Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) is recognized as a major threat to global public health. Hepatitis C virus infection, although a viral infection of the liver, often presents features of the metabolic syndrome. Adiponectin is an adipocytokine secreted by adipocytes, with antidiabetic, antilipogenic and antiatherogenic actions. Objective: To assess the value of serum adiponectin level in the prediction of hepatic necroinflammation in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus infection. Methods: Clinical and biochemical characteristics were collected from 80 patients with chronic HCV infection. Serum adiponectin level and liver biopsy were investigated in all patients. 40 age, sex, BMI matched persons served as a control group. Results: Serum adiponectin level was significantly lower in patients with chronic HCV infection than in control group. Significant negative correlation was found between serum adiponectin level and hepatic necroinflammation in chronic HCV infected patients. Conclusion: Adiponectin level proved to be a reliable predictor of hepatic steatosis and necroinflammation in chronic HCV infected patients. |
