Abstract

This thesis introduces an extensive survey of published work on general concepts of infilled frames under cyclic loading. A numerical procedure for the nonlinear analysis of infilled frames based on the finite element method is presented. The material and geometrical nonlinearities of the reinforced concrete infilled frames taking into account the presence of the steel reinforcement are considered together with cracking and nonlinear stress-strain relation of both concrete and steel. The infill panel material nonlinearities due to cracking and crushing are also considered using ANSYS® Program. In addition, contact, separation, sliding and presence of shear connectors at the interface between the frame and the infill panels are accounted for adjusting the properties of the interface elements. The load-deformation relationships for six verification examples are predicted. The predicted results are good compared with the experimental results done and published by other researchers. Also, the program has been used in studying many factors through an extensive parametric study on the different parameters affecting the nonlinear structural behavior of reinforced concrete infilled frames under cyclic loading. A rational approach for design of reinforced concrete infilled frames was developed. The results of this study are discussed and summarized to get a group of important conclusions. The research study contains six chapters as follows:Chapter 1: presents an introduction for the research including main objectives and research significant.Chapter 2: presents a review on the available research studies on the masonry walls, infilled frames under monotonic loading, and infilled frames under cyclic loading. Chapter 3: introduces a thorough discussion on finite element and material modeling.Chapter 4: presents six examples to verify the effect of changing the masonry infill panel and/or frame member properties on the model behavior.Chapter 5: presents an extensive parametric study on the behavior of infilled frames structures. An equation to calculate the diagonal strut force was introduced.Chapter 6: includes summary, conclusions, and recommendations for further research works.
