Examination of the anatomy and histology of the digestive tract of Oreochromis niloticus fish were carried outEsophagus is a narrow and short musculo - membranous tubeThe stomach is Y - shaped and consists of cardiac , fundic and pyloric regionsThe intestine is long and coiled with no pyloric cecaThe epithelial lining of the esophagus is stratified mucous type with taste buds mainly in the anterior partThe muscularis consisted of outer circular and inner longitudinal striated musclesGastric epithelium abruptly changes into single layer of columnar cellsSecretory epithelium is in the form of simple acinar glands in the cardiac and pyloric regions , and simple tubular glands in the fundic regionThe muscularis of the cardiac region is similar to the esophagus then it is gradually replaced by outer longitudinal and inner circular smooth musclesThe intestine is divided. according to the mucosal folds into proximal and distal segmentsThe mucosal surface is lined by simple columnar cells interspersed with goblet cells which increase distally The muscularis is organized into inner circular and outer longitudinal layers of smooth muscle.
