Abstract

This study was designed to determine the effect of propolis as immuno-stimulant on the general performance, hematological parameters, biochemical constituents of blood, immune response and evaluation of the degree of improvement of pathological lesions induced by Pasteurella muItocida strain in rabbits. Fifty six New-Zealand rabbits, 6-8 weeks old and none vaccinated against pasteurlosis, were randomly divided into eight equal groups (7 in each) and fed balanced ration. The first group was kept as non vaccinated control. The second group was administrated propolis orally at dose SOmg/kg B.W./day for one week. The third group was administrated propolis orally (SOmg/kg B.W./day for one week) then vaccinated with Pasteurella multocida vaccine (2ml SIC). The fourth group was vaccinated with Pasteurella muItocida vaccine (2ml SIC), then after 7 days administrated propolis orally at dose SOmglkg B.W./day for one week. The fifth group was vaccinated with Pasteurella multocida vaccine (2ml SIC) and administrated at the same time propolis orally (SOmg/kg B.W./day for one week). The sixth group was vaccinated with Pasteurella multocida vaccine only (2ml SIC). The seventh group was injected with vaccine mixed with propolis as adjuvant (SOmg/kg B.W. in 2ml SIC). The eighth group was injected with propolis (2ml SIC). All groups received the same doses of propolis and vaccine after 4 weeks as a booster dose with the same route. Samples from each group were collected weekly. Results revealed that ethanolic extract of propolis either administrated alone or combined with formalized inactivated Pasteurella muItocida vaccine in rabbits enhanced specific and non specific immunity, improved general health conditions, liver and kidney functions in addition to reduction of the severity of clinical signs, mortality rates and histopathological changes associated with challenge with Pasteurella multocida strain.
