Abstract The thesis starts by an introduction on airport design history and how it developed, and then it gives a fully illustrated explanation of international airports layout designs and their components. A detailed explanation to designing the main interior spaces to the combined applications of technology serving the e paces along with the interior finishings and fittings recommended in the interior design of airports is then displayed. This study explains how international airports developed through some illustrated layouts from around the world; what were the standards and codes of regulations set for the interior design of such facility to be guided and followed by the interior designer/architect. The main economical and political influences affecting the design of furnishing and zoning such building and how far interior design is taken seriously by the airport operators. There is a fmancial and political de ign asp t from the post 9/11 incident on today’s airport design all over the world. Th airport operators are looking with great interest and care to selecting the interior d ign ar hitects as it has become one of the greatest business asset for their pa nger a’ fa tion and plea ure. The research study runs through se en main asp ts of the modern applications that majorly affect and are normally combined with the interior design work of airports; they are: 1. Illumination. 2. Acoustics. 3. Mechanical and air conditioning olutions. 4. Audiovisuals. 5. Signage and way-finding. 6. Leisure and VIP well being facilities. 7. Facilities for the disabled passengers in airports Each item is explained scientifically according to the international standard design code requirements in international airports; highlighting its importance its influencing interior design work, along with illustrated images or case studies from international airports to compliment. |
