Abstract

- This investigation includes the examination of 250 rabbits of different ages in order to assess the prevalence of enteric bacteria in Beni-Suef Province. Bacteriological study on 210 apparently healthy rabbits revealed the presence of enteric bacteria with an overall incidence of 41.9 % of total number of examined rectal swabs from rabbits
- Enteric bacteria microorganisms from 40 diseased rabbits with an incidence of 78.3% of total number of examined organs.
- The most predominant species recovered were E. coli followed by Enterobacter cloacae, P. vulgaris, Citrobacter diversus, K. pneumoniae, P. mirabilis, Shigella sonne, P. aeruginosa, K. oxycota, Y. enterocolitica and Serratia Liquificans at an incidence 50.5 %, 10.9 %, 9.3%, 6.04 %, 5.5 %, 5.5 %, 4.4 %, 3.3 %, 2.2 %, 1.6 % and 0.54% respectively.
- Serological identification of 92 isolates of E. coli revealed the recovery of the following: (39) O111, (8) O114, and (28) O125, while the other isolates remained untyped.
-The experimental infection using E. coli (O111, O114 and O125), P. mirabilis and K. pneumonia in was done in 4 - 6 weeks old rabbits. The mortality rate reached to 100% in case of E. coli O125. On the other hand, the mortality rate was 75% in case of E. coli O111 and P. mirabilis, while it was 50% in case of E. coli O114 and K. pneumonia. The clinical signs and post mortem lesions were recorded in details.
- Successful reisolation of the inoculated pathogens in pure culture from different organs as liver, heart blood and intestine of all experimental rabbits was achieved.
