Abstract

The study is divided into two main experiments. In the first the conventional or automatic continuous solvent extraction method for lipid determination in feeds, could be dispensed with and replaced by merely soaking procedures. For soaking, glass bottles of sizes suiting the number of samples analyzed, as they can be extracted altogether and put in cachets in free condition. For extraction pure diethyl ether, or a mixture of equal amounts of diethyl and petroleum ethers are used and the solvent should be periodically changed every 2 h. for a maximum of 12 or till a fixed sample weight. Soaking in an unchanged solvent for as long as 24 h. can be used as a field rough estimation. The advised soaking procedure compares well with the conventional Soxhlet.
The second experiment is performed for measuring digestibility of protein in poultry where a sample of pure urine is collected, analyzed, and its uric acid and nitrogen are taken as indicator to estimate the fecal nitrogen. The invented device for collecting urine and feces is double – jacketed, the outer jacket – polyethylene – bag is for urine and the inner jacket – rubber – bag for feces collection. The urine is collected in a first stage of 72 h.; 24 h. fasting, forced feeding, followed by 48 h. collection. The second stage is similar to the first one and specified for DROPping collection. The two stages are separated by 24 h. ad libitum feeding for the bird to rest, and water is always available behind.
