Abstract The spectrum of liver diseases in diabetes mellitus among the studied sector of Egyptian patients ranged from steatosis, steatohepatitis and fibrosis as the histopathological study of the specimens showed steatosis in 53% (17 patients), necro-inflammation in 31% (10 patients), and fibrosis was present in 31% (10 patients). Ultrasonography examination showed 100% sensitivity in detection of the fatty changes of the liver as bright liver was reported in our diabetic patients in 88%, however the specificity was 27% only. The predictors of steatosis were the age and the diabetic state (blood glucose levels). Also the predictors of necro-inflammation (hepatitis) were the age and the diabetic state (blood glucose levels). On the contrary, no predictors of fibrosis as no statistical difference regard the fibrosis and all other variables. Liver cirrhosis was not detected among our cases either because it’s rare occurrence as a complication of diabetes mellitus or because it needs more prolonged period of diabetes mellitus to occur. |
