Abstract

The prevalence of overweight and obesity among children appears to be rising rapidly in many countries around the world. Obesity is linked to serious complications in childhood and an obese child is at risk of becoming an obese adult with an associated raised likelihood of ill health and premature death. In order to combat this emerging epidemic, secular trends in obesity need to be monitored through population surveys. Such monitoring needs to be conducted on the basis of agreed standardized definitions of terms such as obese, overweight and normal weight for specified genders and ages.
The incidence of chronic disease is escalating much more rapidly in developing countries than in industrialized countries. A potential emerging public health issue may be the increasing incidence of childhood obesity in developing countries and the resulting socioeconomic and public health burden faced by these countries in the near future.
The present study analyzed the Factors Affecting the Prevalence of Obesity among Adolescent Girls (10-13 years) in the State of Kuwait.
The general aim of the current study was to assess the prevalence of obesity and its determinants among adolescent girls aged 10 – 13 years in primary and intermediate governmental schools in Kuwait. More specific objective was to assess the role of dietary factors and eating habits in the development of overweight and obesity.
The study was conducted during the scholastic year 2008-2009. A cross-sectional was done and 1456 subjects were examined. Three from the six educational regions in Kuwait were selected randomly. Four schools were randomly selected from the different primary and intermediate governmental schools in each educational region using probability proportionate to the size of the students. Classes were randomly selected from each different grade from the selected school to form the target population of the study. All students were interviewed to answer a pre-structured questionnaire concerning personal, family and dietary information. Anthropometric measurements in the form of weight, height, mid arm circumference, waist circumference were taken, and BMI was calculated. Overweight and obesity was diagnostic to WHO references standard.
After the completion of data collection, data was fed to the computer using SPSS version 15 software for tabulation and analysis. Descriptive statistics as proportion, mean and standard deviation were used to summarize data. Chi-square test was used to association of qualitative data. All tests were two sided and statistical significance was set at P < 0.05.
