Abstract

Erythopoietin is an endogenous growth factor that is absolutely required for erthropoiesis. Recombinant EPO has been successfully and safely used to treat anemia in patients with end stage renal disease. Recently, antibody medical PRCA associated with administration of recombinant EPO has been identified as a cause of major concern. Our study was designed as a cross sectional study to detect and evaluate the presence of anti-EPO Abs in patients with ESRD on regular dialysis. We are aimed to assessment of degree of anti-EPO Abs in hemodialysis patients on recombinant EPO therapy. A total of 90 eligible patients who are currently on regular hemodialysis and on recombined erythropoietin alfa 4000-8000IU/week by SC route for more than 6 months were included and enrolled in this study . Complete blood count, reticulocytes count, serum creatinine, blood urea, serum albumin, serum ferritin, and hepatitis markers were done for all patients. Serum anti-EPO Abs was detected by qualitative ELISA technique. EPO was bound to multi-well plate and the binding of Abs in the patient’s serum was detected by secondary Ab according to the method described by Mason et al., (2003). Our result showed that 35 patients (38.9%) had anti-EPO Abs in thier blood, while 55 patients (61.1%) didn’t According to the presence or absence of the anti-EPO Abs, we divided the study population into 2 groups; the first group had anti-EPO Abs in their serum and the second group didn’t.
