Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease with high prevalence worldwide. In addition to being a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease it is the primary cause of renal failure, blindness and nontraumatic limb amputation. Most diabetes care takes place in the community, largely managed in the primary care setting. A good patient-physician interaction is particularly important in chronic diseases like diabetes. There is considerable evidence that many patients are not following an optimum management regime and that some reasons for this relate to the nature of the patient-doctor relationship. However, despite recent improvements, the quality of diabetes care is far from what is recommended based on current scientific evidence. The aim of this study was to assess the quality of consultation in family practice centers and its effect on glycemic control of newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus. A quasi-experimental design with pre-post assessment was utilized in conducting the study family practice centers and university hospitals affiliated to Menoufiya and Suez Canal Universities. The study sample consisted of 204 recently diagnosed type-2 diabetes patients were recruited from the family care centers, and 202 from the diabetes clinics. The tools used for data collection were a structured interview questionnaire form with enablement scale and a physical assessment sheet. Body mass index (BMI) and HbA1c were measured at baseline, and at six-monthfollow-up.
