Abstract

Slope stability analysis started to be a cause of concern since many decades, due to the increasing of population and the development of construction projects in the coastal zones. Generally slopes can be classified as either natural slopes or man¬made slopes. Slopes can collapse by shear when component of gravity force tends to increase than the shearing resistance along failure plane and thus moves the soil wedge downward. Slopes stability is impOltant for numerous geotechnical subjects such as embankments, earth dams, canals, drains and open excavations for structures. The slope instability hazard had an adverse economical impact on the construction projects. Slope failures caused severe damage to roads, homes, and infrastructures.
The appropriate design for the side slopes is considered an important target in geotechnical engineering. The purpose of slope stability analysis is to contribute to the safe and economical design of side slopes. The aims of this study include review the following:
1. Available failure mechanisms of slope stability.
2. Stability under short-term condition Gust after construction) and under long-
term condition.
4. Effect of seismic loadings on the slope stability analysis.
5. Rehabilitation methods of slopes.
Finally, a case study is presented where the safety factor of Nubaria’s drain is improved by improving the soil properties and by using a line of concrete piles.
