Abstract

this study was carried out in the Microbiology and Immunology Department, Faculty of Medicine, Zagazig University in the period from December 2008 to December 2010.
The study aims to evaluate the role of IFN-γ in the response to the antiviral therapy of chronic hepatitis C patients and to investigate whether the polymorphism in MxA gene of Peripheral Blood Monocyte (PBMC) is associated with the responsiveness of chronic hepatitis C patients to IFN-α therapy
, enhanced IFN- γ production would be predicted to favor HCV clearance. Our finding that the magnitude of post-treatment IFN-γ responses correlates with initial responses to therapy is certainly consistent with this prediction. Notably, in chronic HCV infection, successful IFN-α therapy is associated with the development of efficient Th1 responses to HCV proteins.
