Abstract

Human activities result in generation of wastewater that needs careful management in order to preserve the surrounding environment from pollution. Several treatment processes are commonly used to provide adequate treatment for municipal wastewater (sewage) including natural systems and mechanically operated systems. Mechanically operated systems are encountered in congested areas while natural systems can be applied where available lands is encountered offering less operation and maintenance costs.Compact units using biological treatment process can offer good solution in treating waste water where high efficiency of treatment is required and cost of treatment affordable. This can even be further supported with tertiary treatment to produce better quality effluent. In this study a compact unit using extended aeration process followed by sand filtration as a tertiary treatment was investigated in order to assess the efficiency of the process for treating domestic wastewater from small communities and investigate the quality of treated effluent.
