Abstract Aging person undergone certain physiological changes. For example, externally, one’s hair turns gray and the skin begins to wrinkle. Internally, aging means atrophic changes affect many organs as well as decrease the function of many systems due to slowing of the metabolism. These changes, coupled with a frequently sedentary lifestyle, predisposes the elderly to obesity, however, the very old tend to lose weight, perhaps due to a decrease in appetite. In the elderly, it is difficult to differentiate between those problems related to the age per se and those due to age-related disease process. Age itself is not a major factor in predicting the risks of anesthesia and surgery. Increased morbidity and mortality in older patients reflects the fact that they generally have pre-existing diseases such as ischemic heart disease and diabetes. Marked improvement in anesthesia were associated with a significant reduction in mortality and morbidity of geriatric patients. This review aimed to review the research in geriatric anesthesiology, better prognosis and safe easy techniques for older patients. It was found that regional anesthesia is better tolerated and more suitable to the geriatric age groups. |
