Abstract

Evidence-based medicine is the conscientious, explicit, judicious use of the current best evidence combined with clinical expertise and patient values in making decisions about the care of individual patients. It is a structured approach to literature evaluation, leading to decisions which are based upon probability.
EBM is about integrating the best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values to achieve the best possible patient management and trying to improve the quality of the information on which decisions are based.
EBM is a tool used by physicians and health care policy makers to improve health care of patient, raise physician self confidence at different stages of his career and provide health policy makers with the best evidenced based information that help in better using of the available resources.
Despite enthusiasm in the educational and research communities for EBM, the attitudes of practicing emergency physicians about EBM have not been systematically investigated. Recent surveys have suggested that most physicians still rely on the opinion of colleagues or consultants when making their decisions. Although various barriers to the application of EBM principles in clinical practice have been described, their relative importance to the practicing clinician is unknown.
Searching the available literature did not reveal any studies in Kuwait dealing with EBP among emergency physicians. This study was carried out to determine EBM learning needs of emergency care physicians in Kuwait with the following specific objectives: identify the prevailing knowledge and attitudes EBM concepts, determine sources of obtaining information during clinical practice, reveal the extent of receiving training in EBM, and determine barriers to evidence based practice among emergency care physicians in Kuwait.
