Abstract
The main purpose of this research is to assess the role of the development assistance in overcoming the developmental challenges of poverty reduction and protection of environment in Egypt . this is achieved through 1)Identification of national mechanisms for effective development assistance in the area of poverty and environment. 2) Review of the PRSP and its linkage to the Millennium development goals with focus on mainstreaming environmental aspects in this strategy 3)Examining the effectiveness of the donors funded projects in enhancing the quality of life of the community through case study of Geziret El Shier as a poor urban area. Among the research methodology is the critical and comparative analysis for the theoretical part and the community based approach for the applied part. The research depended on different tools such as the semi structured interviews, focus group discussion, photography, observation , social service matrix. Finally, the researcher had recommended a number of recommendations addressed to the central government, local community and donors that will make aids more effectively in tackling poverty and environment issues
