Abstract

Workplace inspection is necessary and critical as part of safety and health program. The workplace is examined closely for the purpose of identifying and recording potential and actual hazards associated with buildings, equipment, environment and processes. Also it ensures that existing factor affecting in work- related stress there for have impact on worker performance.
A cross- sectional study was designed to investigate relationship between workplace inspection results, work related stress, socio demographic data and there impact on performance appraisal in Alkhartoum & Omdrman localities in the Sudan.
The study was conducted in 49 factories from Khartoum and 116 factories from Omdurman locality with total 165.
Industrial sectors included in this study are: Food, Paints, Iron and metal, Printing, Tanneries & leather, Plastic, Pharmaceutical & perfume, Cements & derivatives, Textile & garments, Oil & soap, Pots α pans household and shoes & sponge.
The study involved 531 workers in Alkhartoum 475 in Omdrman localities with a total of 1006 workers.
Each selected worker was subjected to a pre designed questionnaire to collect information about personal and family histories with special emphasis on socioeconomic& occupational history.
Work stress was assessed using work –related stress questionnaire in each selected worker.
The whole sample (1006) workers were subjected to predetermine performance appraisal and work performance evaluation from the industrial records.
Inspection of workplace of some industrial sectors in Alkhartoum and Omdrman in Sudan revealed that about 42% of studied workplaces were unsatisfactory.
The present study indicates that the emergency procedures, personal protective equipment, first aid & safety, facilities, indoor environment were classified as unsatisfactory workplace inspection, while the rest of the items are found to be satisfactory.
Assessment of some physical hazards mainly, noise, lighting and heat stress in different industrial sectors revealed that 36.6% of the inspected work places are exposed to high noise level according to OSHA standards, 77% are exposed to heat stress levels higher than recommended levels and 68% do not fulfill the industrial lighting requirements.
Study of localities revealed that there was statistically insignificant difference between Alkhartoum and Omdrman related to the results of inspection.
According to the present findings, about 21% of workers were exposed to high level of work-related stress.
. Workers who were under high level of stress were mainly females, below the age of 25 years, unmarried, of low socio economic status with no hobbies.
Those suffering of high level of work- related stress were semiskilled & unskilled employees especially novices who worked for more than 8 hours\ day for less than three years, especially day and evening shift.
Distribution of the studied workers with high level of stress among different industrial sectors revealed that they were mainly found in industries with unsatisfactory workplace inspection (<50%).
Study of localities revealed that there was statistical insignificant difference between Alkhartoum and Omdrman in high work-related stress as both localities were similar in inspection results.
Findings obtained in the present work pointed out that performance of about 44.5% of workers were either unacceptable or need improvement.
Workers who were classified under unacceptable work performance were mainly males, below the age of 25 years, unmarried, of low socio economic status and with no hobbies.
Those classified as unacceptable work performance were semiskilled & unskilled employees especially novices who worked for less than three years, evening shift and for more than 8 hours\ day.
