Abstract

Abo Bakr Tawfik Muhran : Recycling of Palm Tree Leaves and Utilizing it in Rabbit Diets. Unpublished M.Sc. Thesis, Agricultural Science, Institute of Environmental Studies and Research, Ain Shams University, 2010.
The present study was carried out in two experiments:
Experiment 1:
To invistigate the effect of replacing palm tree leaves (PTL) at 33.33, 66.66 or 100% of clover hay as a source of fiber in growing NZW rabbit’s diet. A total number of 80 unsexed, weaned New Zealand White rabbits of 5 weeks old were randomly divided into four experimental groups (20 per group), each in five replicates. Four pelleted experimental diets were formulated to be approximately isocaloric, isonitrogenous and isofibrous. Insignificant (P≥ 0.05) differences were observed in feed consumption among the different experimental groups through the whole experimental period. Replacing 33.33 % of the clover hay by PTL increased the values of CF and EE digestibility compared to the other groups. The group received 33.33% and 66.66% of clover hay as PTL showed insignificant effect on TDN and DCP values, while 100% substitution showed slightly decrease in TDN and CP values. Insignificant effects were observed in some blood parameters. Using of PTL in growing rabbits diet increased significantly live body weight and daily weight gain through the whole experimental period. Feed conversion ratio was improved with feeding 10 or 20% PTL in the rabbit diets compared to control diet..Also insignificant differences were observed in carcass traits. Using PTL as a replacer to clover hay decreased feed cost, improved economical efficency and prformance index..
Experiment 2:
This experiment was conducted to evaluate partial or complete replecement of berseem hay by palm tree leaves (0, 33.33, 66.66 or 100%) in the diets of doe rabbit. A total number of 24 NZW does were rondmly divided ito 4 experimental groups (6 does/group).
Results showed that, doe groups received diets containing PTL rocorded the highest litter size and weaning rabbit number than those given control diet through the first litter. Insignificant effects were observed among exprimental groups in litter size and weaning rabbits number during the second litter. Daily feed consumption was increased with doe rabbits fed diet contained different PTL levels than those given control diet. Feed conversion ratio was improved with does group received 20% PTL diet when compared to those fed 30% PTL diet through two litters.
