Abstract

People with the MetS are at increased risk for developing DM and cardiovascular disease as well as increased mortality from cardiovascular diseases.
Several evidences suggest that Mg depletion may play a key role in the pathophysiology of insulin-resistance DM, HTN, and dyslipidemia.
This study was conducted to assess the relationship between MetS and Mg level in Egyptian elderly patients.
This study is a case-control study performed on 90 elderly 60 years and older, male and female they were recruited from outpatient clinic of Ain Shams University Hospital and divided into two groups.
Case group: 45 patient with MetS diagnosed by Modified ATP III criteria for Clinical Diagnosis of MetS modified by AHA/NHLBI
Control group: 45 persons without any history of systemic diseases each participant was subjected to:
(1) Comprehensive geriatric assessment.
(2) Diagnosis of MetS by ATP III criteria for clinical diagnosis of MetS modified by AHA/NHLBI.
(3) Measurement of FBS, TG, HDL -C and measurement of total Mg level.
This study showed that hypomagnesemia was significantly more among cases with MetS.
Also the study showed that no significant relation between MetS components as regards DM, HTN, high plasma TG and low HDL-C and hypomagnesemia in elderly Subjects. But there was significant relation between high grade of BMI and low serum magnesium level.
Our findings strengthen the need to address a greater attention to magnesium metabolism disturbances in elderly patients with MetS.
We recommend routine Mg level measurement for all elderly subjects with MetS.
