Abstract

Carcinoma of the pancreas is a lethal disease ranked as 13th in its incidence form a global point of view while considered 8th regarding cancer deaths. It is more common in developed than developing countries.
Gallbladder cancer is the most common malignancy of the biliary tract. It has a distinctly higher incidence in certain demographic groups and geographic areas. Among the highest incidences in the world are in women from Chile, Poland, India, Japan, and Israel.
Overall, cholangiocarcinoma is a rare neoplasm. In the United States, approximately 5000 new cholangiocarcinoma cases are diagnosed yearly. (Shaib et al., 2004) Two thirds of cholangiocarcinoma involve the extrahepatic bile ducts, whereas the remaining one third affects the intrahepatic biliary tree
The aim of the present study was registration of different types of malignant tumors of the Pancreas, gallbladder and extra-hepatic biliary tract received at the pathology department of Ain-Shams University Hospitals (El-Demerdash and The Specialized Hospital) during 5 years (from January 2001- December 2005), with full registration of pathological data from the patients’ files.
This registry is a retrospective one using data from patients’ files in above hospitals in the same mentioned period.
Re-examination of H&E stained slides were done to assess histopathological data.
Pancreatic carcinoma (17 cases) represents 0.27% of all malignancies. The age of cases ranged from 25-75 years with a mean age of 52 year. Unlike, other registries incidence was more in females with a M:F ratio of 0.9:1.
Carcinoma of the gallbladder and extra-hepatic bile ducts (12 cases) represents 0.2% of all malignancies. The cases ranged in age from 40-75 years with a mean of 55.5 year. The frequency is more common in females than males with a F:M ratio of 5:1.
The most common type of malignant tumors of the pancreas, gallbladder and extrahepatic biliary tree was adenocarcinoma NOS.
