Abstract

A fifty four healthy rabbits (New Zealand white rabbits) of both sexes, 6 weeks old and weighed 800 to 1200 gm were used to evaluate the efficacy of Azithromycin, Florfenicol and Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole against the pasteurellosis. They were divided into 8 groups (each of 6 rabbits except the td gp include 12). The gp (1) kept as control, gp (2) intranasally infected with 1.75 x 108 P multocida A3, gp (3) was daily intramuscularly injected with Azithromycin by a dose 23 mg/kg B wtlday for 5 successive days, gp (4) was intramuscularly injected with 2 doses of 30 mg/ kg B wt of Florfenicol day after’ day, gp (5) was daily intramuscularly injected with Trimethoprim- sulfamethoxazole by a dose 60 mg/ kg B wt /day for 5 successive days, gp (6) was firstly infected with P. multocida A3, then treated with Azithromycin by the same doses in gps (2 and 3), gp (7) was infected with P. multocida A3, then treated with Florfenicol and gp (8) was infected with P. multocida A3, then treated with Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. The gp (2) showed respiratory signs with conjunctivitis; uncoordinated movements and severe depression besides 33.33% mortalities. The lungs were congested, focally hepatized and became whitish and purulent. Microscopically, the lungs showed extensive hemorrhages and congested blood vessels and multi focal pneumonic areas with neutrophils and eosinophilic serofibrinous exudate. The trachea showed inflammation with few neutrophils infiltrations. The pleura were slightly thickened with fibrinous exudate and few neutrophils infiltrations, after 14 and 21 days it became firmly adhered with the underlying pulmonary tissue. The interalveolar septa were thickened with focal aggregations of mononuclears; areas of atelectasis and ompensatory emphysema were focally seen. Catarrhal bronchitis was seen and the bronchial epithelia were also fused together with formation of respiratory syncytial giant cells. The cartilage ring of the affected trachea was locally necrotic and showed several cavitations. The heart showed pericarditis ,with serofibrinous exudate entrapped few neutrophils. The liver was large.
