Abstract Tuberculosis is one of the most important infectious diseases in the world. The principal etiologic agent is Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which currently infects 2 million people worldwide and causes 8 million new cases of active tuberculosis and 2.9 million deaths annually (Kochi 1991). The emergence of multidrug-resistant strains of M. tuberculosis is an ominous new threat to the public health. The only available vaccine is bacillus of Calmette and Guerin (BCG), it is a strain of M. bovis and of questionable efficacy (Fine 1989).
