Abstract

Tuberculosis is one of the most important infectious diseases in the world. The
principal etiologic agent is Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which currently infects 2
million people worldwide and causes 8 million new cases of active tuberculosis and
2.9 million deaths annually (Kochi 1991). The emergence of multidrug-resistant
strains of M. tuberculosis is an ominous new threat to the public health. The only
available vaccine is bacillus of Calmette and Guerin (BCG), it is a strain of M. bovis
and of questionable efficacy (Fine 1989). Bovine tuberculosis is a chronic infectious
disease in cattle caused by M. bovis remains an economic and public health problem
in several countries. Due to its economic impact on international trade, contagious
nature and implications for human health the global programs to eradicate the disease
were implemented worldwide. Those programs were based on slaughtering PPDreactive
animals (Medeiros et al., 2010)
