Abstract

In this thesis, the performance of a six-step voltage source inverter (VSI) induction motor system is investigated when fed from either a conventional DC supply or a photovoltaic (PV) array. The performance and sizing of the PV arrays are also presented.A method for determining the parameters of a photovoltaic module from the manufacturer data has been explained. The performance of an uncontrolled rectifier bridge sinusoidal pulse-width-modulated (SPWM) VSI induction motor system is investigated, and the performance of an uncontrolled rectifier bridge space vector pulse-width-modulated (SVPWM) VSI induction motor system has been also investigated. These two PWM schemes (SPWM and SVPWM) are compared in terms of the harmonic performance of the generated voltage waveforms and the harmonic load (motor) losses.A method for designing a DC-link between the rectifier bridge and a voltage-source inverter has been given. The performance characteristics of the systems studied in this thesis are obtained using MATLAB language programming and MATLAB SIMULINK software package.
