Abstract T he aim of this research was to suggest an updated description of the preventive effect of Acetylsalicylic Acid (Aspirin) on irradiated parotid and submandibular salivary glands. Forty two female albino rats, with an average weight 100-150 gm, were used in this study. The animals were divided into two main groups: 1) The control group (group C), that contains six female rats. That were not exposed to irradiation and not given Aspirin. 2) The experimental group (group E), that contains thirty six female Rats which was further subdivided into two sub-groups: - Sub-group (A): 18 rats received gamma radiation only. - Sub-group (B): 18 rats received Acetylsalicylic acid in drinking water 2.5g/1L one week before the exposure to irradiation and continued up to 5 weeks after irradiation. - The experimental group (group E) were killed according to the times shown in the following table: Experimental Group Number of rats Weeks after irradiation Sub-group (A): Sub-group (B): 6 rats 6 rats One week Sub-group (A): Sub-group (B): 6 rats 6 rats Three weeks Sub-group (A): Sub-group (B): 6 rats 6 rats Five weeks - The control group rats (group C) were killed 2 rats correspond to each period of the experimental subgroups. The sections were stained by haematoxylin and eosine for histological study, and the following techniques for histochemical study: 1. Silver staining for detection of Argyrophilic Nucleolar Organizer Region (AgNOR). 2. Alcian blue ph 2.5 and PAS reaction (Mowry’s method) for neutral and acid mucopoly-saccharides. 3. Mercuric bromphenol blue (Bonhag’s method) for detection of total proteins. It was observed from the results that irradiation caused histological damage, decrease the percentage of the survival cells, increase in the GAGs content, and decrease the total protein content in both glands. While the administration of ASA before exposure to irradiation and throughout all the periods of experiment leads to the reduction of the damage caused by irradiation in the histological structure, the percentage of the survival cells, the GAGs content, and the total protein content in both glands. |
