Abstract

Non domestic birds are useful biomarkers for the examination of pollutant levels over wide geographical areas because they often are high on the food chain and live for many years, allowing for bioaccumulation and detection of detrimental levels of environmental pollutants. This study was carried out to assess the role of non domestic birds either migrating (wild ducks and little egrets) or non-migrating (crows and cattle egrets) as bioindicator for some environmental pollutants in Sharkia Province, and also an experimental study was done to evaluate the hepatotoxic effect of Pb and the ameliorative effect of eo-treatment with curcumin in female albino rats. 1- Determination of the residues of some insecticides and heavy metals in tissues of non-domestic birds as a biomarker for some environmental pollutants:- Sixteen non-domestic birds (4 birds / each species) including wild ducks, little egrets, crows and cattle egrets were collected from two localities belonging to Sharkia Province during the period from February to April, 2010. The first three bird species were collected from Al-Abassa, Abu-Hammad City; while the fourth was from Hehia City. 1.1. Detection of organochlorine pesticides and pyrethroid residue in abdominal fat and liver of non-domestic birds:- Organochlorine and pyrethroid residues were measured m abdominal fat and liver of nine birds including wild ducks, little egrets and crows (3 birds / each species) on wet weight basis (Ppb).
