Abstract

The retroperitoneum is that portion of the abdomen posterior to the peritoneal cavity from the diaphragm to the pelvic inlet. It contains portions of the colon and duodenum as well as the pancreas, kidneys, adrenal glands, abdominal aorta, and inferior vena cava (IVC).
This study was conducted on 30 patients with abnormal finding due to retroperitoneal trauma. They were 19 males and 11 females, US and MDCT, were done for all patients and plain-x ray were done only for 9 patients .The US and MDCT imaging findings were compared with the laproscopic and operative findings.
According to MDCT findings, the cases were, 14cases with renal injures, 6 cases with pancreatic injures, 2 cases with duodenal injures, 3 cases were represented with retroperitoneal hematoma, 2 cases with GIT injures (colonic hematoma) and 1case with aortic injury.
In our study we use US as primary diagnostic tool, US has well-known advantages in the evaluation of major trauma, including minimal preparation time, low cost, wide availability, portability, and noninvasiveness.
from this study, US has some disadvantages. It shows poor sensitivity for the detection of retroperitoneal injuries. Moreover, even when solid organ injuries are detected, US often leads to underestimation of injury severity. For this reason, negative US findings do not exclude retroperitoneal injury.
