Abstract

Dental service is a one of the most frequently neglected aspects of health care for hearing impaired children. Many previous studies have proved that there was no statistically significant difference in oral health status for hearing impaired compared to normal children, as they are treated like normal children. No previous data concerning the effect of the degree of hearing impairment on the oral health status and behavior in Egyptian hearing impaired children is available. This study aimed to assess the effect of the degree of hearing impairment on the oral health status and behavior of hearing impaired children then compare them with normal children in Egyptian preschool age, in Alexandria city.
One-hundred children of males and females with only primary dentition (4-6 years old). Fifty children with hearing impairment were selected from Unit of Phoniatrics, ENT Department, Faculty of Medicine, Alexandria University, which segmented into two sub-groups according to the level of hearing impaired children, (less than profound and profound). Fifty normal children were randomly selected from Alex Play School, Alexandria city.
An informed consent was taken from parents and a questionnaire was filled for the two studied groups. The behaviors were evaluated according to Frankel’s Behavior Rating and Wright’s Behavior Classification.
Information concerning degree of the hearing impairment according to audiometry scale, Intelligence assessment according to Stanford-Binet intelligence scale and an Arabic language comprehension assessment according to the comprehensive Arabic language test, were collected from patient’s files in the Unit of Phoniatrics.
Afterwards, children were clinically examined and their dmf was evaluated according to WHO criteria.
