Abstract

The aim of this study was to compare the effect of using breast milk versus two local medications on the healing of cracked nipples. A sample of (120) lactating women were randomly selected from the postnatal and pediatric outpatient clinics of Shatby University Hospital in Alexandria. The inclusion criteria were: breastfeeding, complaining of cracked nipples, not initiating any treatment for cracked nipples and approval to participate in the study. The selected subjects were equally divided into three study groups (each group comprised ²40² women). Each group was instructed to apply one of the three treatment modalities namely; ״breast milk, lanolin ointment and anaflex cream ” for 4 weeks duration. Three tools were used to collect the necessary data. The first tool was a structured Interview Schedule to elicit the socio-demographic and biological characters as well as current knowledge and practices regarding cracked nipples. The second Tool was The Healing and pain Assessment Scale, which comprised two parts: part (a): Modified Reeda Scale (RS) & part (b): Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). This tool was used to provide a baseline data regarding current signs and symptoms of cracked nipples among the study subjects. The third tool was an observation follow-up checklist to assess the healing speed of the cracked nipples among the three study groups. A pilot study was conducted before embarking into the actual work.
