Abstract

The biological control is an accepted option in the fight against schistosomiasis and other trematode diseases. One of the promising means of this type of control may be competitive snails which beside reducing the population of target snails may affect also schistosomiasis transmission in water habitats by reducing snail infection. An important candidate snail spp. in this respect is the freshwater prosobranch Melanoides tuberculata Müller (Thiaridae: Prosobranchia). Therefore, this snail species was thoroughly studied for the morphological and genetic analysis of its populations, trematode infection, impact on the medically important snails in Egypt Bulinus truncatus, Biomphalaria glabrata and Helisoma duryi as well as its effect on Schistosoma haematobium infection of B. truncatus.
