Abstract

The aim of the study was done to assess efficiency of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) of nursing staff working at Ain Shams Children’s hospital. The study carried out in different pediatric settings medical, surgical, and neonatal and pediatric intensive care unit affiliated to Ain Shams Children’s hospital. The study subjects composed of one hundred and eighty nurses were working at the previously mentioned settings as a permanent staff, more than two year experience regardless to their age, qualification and previous attending training course. Data were collected by using three tools; 1. Questionnaire sheet, to assess the knowledge, 2. Attitude ratings scale, to asses attitude and 3. Observational checklist to asses the efficiency of CPR performed by nurses. Result of the study showed that great majority of the nurses had a positive attitude toward importance of performing CPR competently but very small minority had satisfactory knowledge and were competent. Also study result showed bachelor degree nurses had the highest score of knowledge and practice conversely diploma nurses had the lowest score. The study concludes that nurses in the study setting were not competent to deal with cardiopulmonary arrest and so on CPR performed were not efficient. The study recommended for the urgency to improve knowledge and practice of nurses’ related to CPR through training course and continuous in-service education.
