Abstract

S
everal reports have previously noted a possible association between abnormal levels of thyroid hormone and the risk of cardiovascular disease. Even mildly altered thyroid status reportedly affects the risk of coronary artery disease and cardiovascular mortality. Chronic renal failure affects thyroid function in multiple ways.
In a cross-sectional study design, we tried to explore thyroid hormone patterns in a series of 50 patients with ESRD on regular hemodialysis, and to search for a possible correlation between thyroid hormones and common cardiovascular risk factors as well as with the inflammatory status reflected by C reactive protein, in this series of patients.
Our results showed no significant correlation between either T3 or T4 and any of the common cardiovascular risk factors in this series of patients.
In the same way, our results showed no significant correlation between either serum free T3, free T4 or TSH and C reactive protein.
It was concluded that the reported increase of all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality with thyroid dysfunction in ESRD patients may be mediated by mechanisms other than augmentation of the basic well-known cardiovascular risk factors or increase of C reactive protein levels.
