Abstract

The main objective of the research is to study the effect of some herbs, which include (Milk Thistle - Burdock - Sorrel and their mixture) to
treat some diseases of the liver using experimental animals. Mature male
albino rats weighing 150-160 g were obtained from Laboratory of Animal
Colony, Helwan, Egypt. The animals were divided into 10 equal groups;
one group was kept as a (C –ve) group, while the other 9 groups were
injected s/c by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in paraffin oil 50% V/V (2ml /
kg B.Wt.) twice a week for two weeks to induce chronic liver damage.
Rats with liver intoxication were disparted into nine equal groups (n= 6
rats) using two doses (250 and 500 mg/kg of milk thistle, burdock, sorrel
extract and mixture of them.
At the end of experimental period (28 days), blood samples were
collected for serum separation to determine serum liver enzymes (ALT,
AST, ALP, GGT, GOT, GPT) total protein, total cholesterol, triglycerides,
lipoprotein fractions (HDLc, LDLc and VLDLc) albumin, globulin,
albumin/globulin (A/G) ratio and kidney function (creatinine, urea and uric
acid).
Results of the present investigation revealed that all tested
herbs showed a significant enhancement in liver intoxication and all
tested parameters.
According to these results, Milk Thistle, Burdock and Sorrel could
be used for impaired liver function.
Key words: liver enzymes, herb extracts, histopathological changes.
