Abstract The development and implementation of Environmental Management Systems will be an important requirement in the construction companies during the near future to control the impact of their activities on environment and to promote sustainable development. The purpose of this study is to develop a model to identify the elements, processes, and procedural guidelines for the successful implementation of an Environmental Management Systems (EMS) in either public or private Egyptian construction companies. Furthermore, the study will identify both the driving forces for the implementation of EMS, and the difficulties and obstacles of implementation concluding with the success factors for EMS adoption and implementation. Data was gathered through two questionnaires and two semi structured interviews. A third questionnaire was used to validate the proposed model for the EMS implementation. The study revealed that successful adoption and implementation of the EMS in the construction companies not only depends on the efforts and arrangements provided inside the companies’ boundaries, but also depends on the participation and involvement of the key stakeholders outside the companies’ boundaries. |
