Abstract

This work was carried out at The Experimental Farm, Faculty of Environmental Agricultural Sciences, El-Arish, Suez Canal University during 2007 to 2010 seasons to seek for promising hybrids of eggplant suitable to North Sinai region, and to determine the genetic parameter of eggplant. This study included six cultivars of eggplant (Spa-3, Spa-6, Black Beauty (B.B.), Ma-1, PIG-4 and Jor-3), introduced from different geographical regions, used to produce 15 F1 hybrids, which were all possible hybrid combinations among them in one way. The six parents, 15 F1 populations and check hybrid (classic F1) were evaluated in 2009/2010 under protected cultivation in plastic houses in a completely randomized means block design with three replications for vegetative characters, earliness, early and total yield and fruit characteristics. The obtained results cleared that all the F1 means surpassed their respective parents and the check hybrid in most studied characters. Heterosis over mid-parents was significant or highly significant with positive values. Average heterosis over the better parent value was not significant or negative for most traits. Average heterosis over the check hybrid was highly significant with positive values for many traits. Both general and specific combining ability were highly significant for most studied traits. Black Beauty and Ma-1 cultivars were good combiners for many traits. Additive component (D) was insignificant for early and total yield, while both dominance genetic variances.
