Abstract

Electric arc furnace (E.A.F.) dust is a waste product which is generated when steel scrap is melted in an electric arc furnace. It contains high concentrations of iron, zinc and lead. This research aims to: production of useful chemicals such as iron oxide and zinc oxide, and removal of lead from residue resulted after extraction of iron and zinc to make the final residue suitable for safe landfilling without fear of leaching of hazardous species of Pb in the soil. To achieve such goal: the dust was subjected to reaction with sulphuric acid to convert the species of iron and zinc to corresponding sulphates, a subsequent chemical precipitation by alkalis was carried out to promote selective separation, and then the residue contain lead sulphate (PbSO4) was treated to produce
a precipitate composed of a mixture of lead sulphide and some lead oxides. The results obtained from experiments showed that: 46 % of Iron contained in the dust and 97 % of Zinc contained in the dust can be extracted from the dust under the optimal conditions. At the same time the extraction of the lead amounted to 100 % of lead contained in the dust.
