Abstract Delay is a serious problem in the Egyptian construction industry. It is costly for both owner and contractor .The owner’s loses are representing in missing out on the potential revenues from the use of the project and by increased overhead cost for contract administration and supervision. The contractor’s loses due to increased costs in overhead. His losses may include lost opportunities for new projects because of diminished financial capabilities. In public projects, like roads and bridges, the public may be affected by the delay in the utilization of these infrastructures and public buildings. The main objective of this study is to analyze the causes of delays in the construction of roads and bridges projects in Egypt since 1990’s. This is achieved by identifying the frequency of project delays, extent of these delays, factors causing the delays, and responsibility for delays. Reviews of the literature and research work relevant to this research are covered. Questionnaires were used in identifying fifty possible factors that may cause delays of construction projects in Egypt. These factors were grouped into nine categories. Data were analyzed using suitable statistical methods. Based on survey results, literature review of proper management techniques, and surveying opinions to number of professionals in Egyptian construction industry , recommendations were presented to mitigate delays in the future projects. |
