Abstract

Summary
Injury is a leading cause of death among children older than I year. In fact,
or children, injury exceeds all other causes of death combined. Death from
intentional injury accounts for 65% of all injury deaths in the children young than
9 years.
The cost of pediatric trauma involves more than time, money, and resourc1es,
involves disrupted lives and takes an enormous emotional t~ll on families and
ealth care personnel.
An injury is defined as ”the physical damage that results when a human body
suddenly subjected to energy in amounts that exceed the threshold of physiological
lerance.
Tragically, the home environment IS the next most common scene of
iatric injury. Approximately 35% of significant injuries occur as the result of
cidents in the very environment that should be the most sheltering and nurturing to
ildren.
The aim of the study was to evaluate the magnitude of the problem of
iatric trauma in Abu-Hamrnad area, in order to determine the different patterns
the main underlying causes of child injuries. The work searches the risk factors
how to control the problem.
Our patients were divided into 6 groups: 0 (under 1 year); 1-2 years; 3-5
rs; 6-10 years; 11-14 years; 15-18 years
All children were subjected to the following; baseline assessment for each
’ld by history, clinical examination and investigations if indicated.

In our study we found that males (821 injuries) were more affected than
ales (359) which can be explained by many theories as being males have higher
’vity levels than females.
The number of injuries is directly related to age, the biggest number of
ries is found in adolescents aged 15-18 years.
The biggest number of injuries was recorded through July while the least
ber of injuries was at January.
