Abstract This study was designed to investigate the effects of using cooperative learning strategy for developing the oral communication skills of the first year students in the Department of English at l’urt-Suid Faculty of Education. Speaking and listening are the main components of the oral communication skills. They are reciprocul; each reinforces the other. In real-Jife uses of the language. one does not occur withont the other. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop both the speaking and the listening skills of the prospective teachers of English. It was experimental in design. The subjects of the study comprised all students of the first year in the Department of English at Port-Said Faculty of Education. Thirty males and females were selected randomly for the experimental group and thirty students were selected also randomly for the control group. In the light of the literature review, the study instrument was developed (The Pre~ Post oral communication skill test). The test was divided into hm sections: Section I ; The speaking test which consisted of 4 tasks to assess the following speaking sub-skills : asking for and giving information, describing, narrating or telling a story and asking questions. The speaking test was conducted through tape - recorded interviews with the studt:nts. Section II : The listening test which consisted of 4 tasks to assess the following listening sub-skills : listening for specific information, listening for the main idea, listening for responding and listening for note-taking. The listening test was administered in the language laboratory of the faculty. The responses of the st~dents for the listening test were written in answer sheets by the students. The pre-post oral communication skill test was prepared by the researcher and was administered to both the control group and the experimental group as a pre-post test. A proposed teaching unit was designed by the researcher utilizing some cooperative learning tasks in order to develop the students} oral communication skills. |
