Abstract

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is the single most frequent infectious complication
in renal transplant recipients. CMV infections were associated with decreased patient survival, graft
survival.
Methods: This single-center, retrospective study includes 611 patients who received renal allotransplantation
from January 2003 to December 2009 at Mansoura Urology and Nephrology Center.
We detected that 62 (10%) patients were infected with CMV disease (study group), this group was
compared with 62 patients were not infected with CMV disease (control group) .all the patients
didn’t receive any prophylaxis for CMV.CMV PCR was used to diagnose CMV disease posttransplantation.
Results: the Prevalence of CMV disease was 10% .pre-transplant CMV IgG was positive in both
groups, in both donor and recipient. The mean onset for CMV disease was 71±48 days post
transplantation. In our study (40.7%) of patients who received Alemtuzumab (Campath- 1H)
developed CMV disease, compared to (6.9%) to those who received Basiliximab. Acute rejection
through the first year post transplantation in CMV infected patients was significant (p-value 0.03).
There was significant difference regarding graft survival (p-value >0.05) and patient survival (p-value
>0.05) between study and control group, both patient and graft survival were significantly lower in
the CMV diseased group.
