Abstract Medication noncompliance is associated with negative detrimental consequences such as exacerbation of psychotic symptoms, increased risk of relapse and recurrent hospitalization. Therefore, improving drug compliance holds the potential for decreasing the patients’ suffering. Evidences indicate that in order to enhance compliance, both the attitude toward medication and insight into illness should be targeted, and enhanced through a multi-component therapeutic approach. This approach could be the drug compliance therapy which encompasses a combination of different strategies including the motivational interviewing, cognitive-behavioral techniques, therapeutic stance, and psycho-education. The aim of the current study was to examine the effect of ”drug compliance therapy” on the compliance, attitude toward medication, and insight among hospitalized psychiatric patients. This study hypothesized that ”drug compliance therapy” will enhance the compliance, attitude toward medication, and insight among hospitalized psychiatric patients. The present study followed a quasi–experimental design. It was conducted at El-Maamoura Hospital for Psychiatric Medicine in Alexandria, in the ten wards that serve patients with psychotic disorders. |
