Abstract

Nowadays, modern irrigation systems including center pivot and drip irrigation, becomes the commonly used systems in the irrigation of agricultural land especially newly reclaimed areas. Such systems yield the higher irrigation efficiency and are suitable for different land topography compared to other irrigation systems.
The main objective of the present thesis is the economical design of a combined system of both center pivot and drip irrigation for an area of given topography. The main target aims at defining the layout of the combined system that gives minimum total annual cost of the system. The considered costs include annual costs of pipes, pump station, accessories, in addition to the annual energy cost required to operate the pumping units. Two different layouts for the arrangements of pivots are considered. For each of these two layouts, three scenarios for the piping networks supplying water to the pivots and the drippers are studied. As an integrated irrigation system, two different layouts of for the drip irrigation network are studied to irrigate the spaces between pivots. These include squared and triangular layouts.
A computer program is prepared using Matlab software to design the required combined system considering six different layout scenarios. The program defmes the scenario which gives the minimum total annual cost of the system. As a case study, the computer program is applied considering five farms of different areas ranging from 1000 to 5000 feddan located at the end of branch (3) in Toshka project. Minimum total annual cost design is obtained for each of the five farms.
