Abstract This study is an attempt to explore the field of ‘prepositions’ as an indispensable component of speech, which plays an effective role in language-the natural medium of communication. Although linguists regard prepositions as a minor part of speech that is less important than the major parts: noun, verb, adjective and adverb, their significance is clear, not only on the syntactic and semantic levels, but also on the pragmatic one. On the syntactic level, prepositions are so important that some theorists tend to call some of them ‘grammaticized’ parts of speech. They are grammaticized in the sense that they have their own specific syntactic roles in the language- roles which are not determined by their meanings. On the semantic level, prepositions are used to express various relationships in meaning. As for the pragmatic role of prepositions - which may constitute the real contribution of this study, it is outstanding in the metaphorical extensions of the various prepositional meanings. A preposition can play a crucial role in the interpretation(s) of the utterance in which it occurs. |
