Abstract This study is devoted to discuss the rendition of the definite article in the Holy Quran. The data are drawn from two translations by Al-Hilali and Khan (1993) and Al-Hayek (1996). It critically examines the generic and referential employment of the definite article in the thirtieth part of the Holy Quran, showing that translators of the Holy Quran often confused the two uses. Discussions therein are raised to support the correct rendition by checking the definite noun through context according to linguistic parameters. The study reveals a high ratio wrong (41%) of mistranslations in conveying the definite nouns. |
